Things I love about my job:
1. I get to work with hilarious people (mostly)
2. Everyone is here for long hours so there’s no need to bemoan how long you work
3. We get free coffee from a mobile coffee van once a week
4. I occasionally get sent on junkets
5. We get free beer often
6. I am learning new and exciting things EVERY day. Not just random facts but construction methods, safety facts and options, history.
7. I don’t have to think about what I’m wearing to work, I wear the orange uniform, and no-one comments if I don’t iron my work shirts.
8. They have low-fat milk for coffee
9. I get to spend a significant portion of my day outside
10. I get to do lots of training – confined spaces, work at heights, IR etc.
11. I am learning to make decisions on my own and on the spot.
Things I hate about my job:
1. Checking steel
2. Angry people (especially when things aren’t going well)
3. The ridiculously long hours
4. The reflective silver strip on my shirt is right at boob level, it’s just not cool.
5. Arguing with the safety department when we should be getting things done
6. Having to dodge around whenever any of the guys ask me questions I don’t want to answer
7. Not having a supervisor (foreman) for my work area and having to work out all the crazy little things that he would just sort out.
8. Forgetting to do little things… like concrete orders.
9. Getting stared at every time a guy makes a dirty joke (as if they’re waiting for me to get upset and cry) or having them apologise every time they swear in front of me (like I am a fragile glass ballerina who will shatter under the weight of their cussing).
10. The stress, and the times when I’m not sure I can cope
11. Having to have those times when I’m not sure I can cope
There, a top 11 for each.
